The Institute provides support to Kellogg faculty fellows who wish to organize research conferences and workshops on Kellogg themes, invite guest lecturers, or arrange extracurricular events such as lectures, seminars, and films. Kellogg may provide logistical support for events scheduled well in advance.

Limited funding of activities related to Kellogg themes is available to members of the Notre Dame community who are not affiliated with the Institute (see Intramural Grants).
 

Research Conferences and Workshops

Research Conferences

Kellogg makes grants of up to $35,000 for research conferences organized by its faculty fellows, giving preference to conferences that match major Institute priorities. On top of this amount, the Institute may match up to $15,000 from non-Institute sources for conference funding.

Grants up to $10,000 will go through the Grants Committee. The Faculty Committee can supplement those awards with additional amounts for major research conferences addressing Kellogg priorities.

Faculty members are strongly encouraged to seek other funding sources to supplement and leverage Kellogg support. Kellogg-supported conferences ordinarily are cosponsored by other Notre Dame units or external entities, and need not be held at the University. Conferences often result in published volumes. Applicants' proposals and budgets must include information about other sources of funding and sponsorship.

Workshops

Workshops generally are small and informal, often addressing research issues at an exploratory stage of a project. Workshop grants may also be used to invite scholars and experts to critique a faculty member's manuscript. Grants of up to $5,000 are available for workshops.

Distinguished Lectureships

The Institute will consider proposals from faculty fellows to fund especially distinguished lecturers or performers for periods of up to two weeks. Distinguished lecturers are expected to give a major public lecture or a series of presentations. The maximum award is $10,000.

Preference is given to proposals for candidates whose visit would have maximum impact at Notre Dame through such activities as participating in faculty seminars or courses; workshops or other research collaborations; events at residence halls; or extracurricular activities sponsored by student groups.

To Apply for Distinguished Lectureship Grants

Submit a proposal that includes:

  • Objectives of the visit
  • Specifics of the proposed activities (who? what? when? where? why?)
  • Lecturer’s curriculum vitae
  • Preferences, if any, regarding dates for the visit
  • A detailed line-item budget and budget justification
  • A list of cosponsors and their level of support
     

Events

The Kellogg Institute makes available to faculty fellows small grants to support group events such as lectures, seminars, film, and cultural events or exhibitions that advance understanding of international studies and of Kellogg’s major themes in particular. The best proposals will bring together different elements of the Kellogg and/or Notre Dame communities in innovative ways.The maximum award is $5,000.

To Apply for Event Funding

Submit a letter that describes:

  • What the event entails
  • How it relates to Kellogg themes
  • When and where it will take place
  • Who it involves (audience and participants)

Include in addition:

  • An itemized budget and budget justification. The budget should show both the full cost of the project and the amount requested from Kellogg, and should indicate likely sources of funding for the part of the budget not covered by Kellogg and how much funding has already been secured.

Proposals for event cosponsorship up to $1,000 may be submitted at any time and will be evaluated on a rolling basis.

Proposals for funding greater than $1,000 will be evaluated four times per academic year by a faculty Grants Committee.
